Understanding the trade-off between agricultural growth and environmental impact

Agricultural Trade & Sustainability

Research on the links between agricultural trade, rural livelihoods and environmental sustainability in Indonesia, including work under the Trade, Development and Environment Hub (Trade Hub).

Background

Indonesia's agricultural export sectors are a major source of rural income and foreign exchange, but expansion has also been linked to deforestation, biodiversity loss and social conflict over land. CCSF contributes to the Trade, Development and Environment Hub (Trade Hub), a Global Challenges Research Fund programme supported by UK Research and Innovation (GCRF UKRI), examining these trade-offs.

Our approach

Our work looks at the socio-economic impacts of agricultural trade policy on smallholders and rural communities, alongside the environmental footprint of major export commodities.
